Ruth Green is a well-known printmaker based in Birmingham, UK. She produces wonderful, colourful silkscreen prints by hand that are inspired by mid-century patterns. She has published several books for children with Tate Publishing and her illustrations have a delightfully retro feel. The retro style works very well with the lovely rhyming story of two happy hedgehogs, Herbert and Hilda, who decide to take a trip to the beach one sunny day.
The two hedgehogs hop on a bus with their picnic and swimsuits and head off to the seaside for the day. Hilda and Herbert make the most of everything the beach has to offer; eating their picnic, playing games, building sandcastles in the sun, meeting friendly sea creatures, swimming with dolphins, and of course some surfing. The hedgehogs make one last stop for ice cream cones before heading home, tired and happy.
This book is well produced, nicely written, and would make a nice gift for a young child. The vibrant colours and lively drawings should keep any toddler engaged and you may even find yourself longing for a trip to the beach.
