CBI and Laureate na nÓg Electric Picnic Extravaganza

EP poster 2016For the second year running Children’s Books Ireland and Laureate na nÓg will bring all the wonder, magic and fun of children’s books to the Mindfield arena at Electric Picnic. Laureate na nÓg PJ Lynch will appear in the Literary Tent along with some high profile author and illustrator friends on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th of September, alongside Children’s Books Ireland’s Book Clinic and Epic Monster Doodles. From babies to teenagers to those who are simply young at heart, these events are for anyone with a love of drawing, an appreciation for illustration or a grá for the written word.

Saturday features Laureates Live: current Laureate na nÓg, illustrator and twice winner of the Kate Greenaway medal PJ Lynch will be in conversation with former Laureate and creator of Disney’s Henry Hugglemonster Niamh Sharkey. Expect an insight into their creative worlds and working practices in this talk moderated by children’s author Patricia Forde, former Director of the Galway Arts Festival and key player in Galway’s successful bid to be European City of Culture 2020. We’ll also be asking you to express your creative side with a live draw-along, recreating PJ and Niamh’s favourite characters and scenes.  (Saturday 1pm-2pm)

On Sunday the art of fiction writing is at the forefront with a conversation between four children’s authors at the top of their games: former Irish Times Arts Editor and author of the Darkmouth series of books Shane Hegarty; Dave Rudden, whose debut novel Knights of the Borrowed Dark has been chosen as the Dublin City Libraries Citywide Read for 2017; and author of When Mister Dog Bites Brian Conaghan. Award-winning illustrator Chris Judge (The Lonely Beast, Danger is Everywhere) will be on hand to create a visual record of the conversation with just a marker to hand! (Sunday 1pm-2pm)

EP015imOn both days from 12.30pm the Children’s Books Ireland Book Doctors will be seeing patients and recommending great books. Doctors Louise and Olivia will consult with young patients, diagnose their reading complaints and send them off with a book prescription to be filled at their local library or bookshop. The Book Clinic welcomes all families and is perfect for the bookworm who has finished a long series and doesn’t know what to read next as well as the reluctant reader who is yet to find a book to love.

The Electric Picnic Epic Monster Doodles will also take place in the Mindfield Arena. The Epic Monster Doodle allows families to express themselves and work together to produce a massive piece of art. Meet our resident illustrators, learn how to draw the scariest of monsters and join in a massive communal drawing on a huge roll of paper.
