Children’s Books Ireland announces Small Print – a pilot picturebook programme for 50 ELC settings

Children’s Books Ireland is proud to announce that applications are open to register interest in Small Print, a programme to encourgae reading and creative engagement through picturebooks with young children in Early Learning and Care and School-Age Childcare settings. Children’s Books Ireland has curated a selection of ten excellent picturebooks for young children (aged 2.5 to 6), drawing on the principles of early learning and development and the themes of Aistear. Fifty packs will be available, to include a set of these books, a large poster to encourage parents to read with their children and a resource pack for staff to guide their engagement with the books.

With the overarching criterion of artistic excellence, we have selected books that will help professionals in ELC settings to develop a keen sense of how to use picturebooks in their practice in a sustainable way in order to illustrate and deepen children’s understanding of their own unique identity; the world around them; equality and diversity; the child’s relationships with friends, family and community and the importance of play.

The resource booklet gives a number of suggested activities related to each of the books. This gives ELC professionals a solid foundation not just for engaging with these ten books in an age-appropriate way that is relevant to their practice, but gives them an introduction to the creative, imaginative use of excellent books to illustrate key concepts in a child’s early learning and development journey. The printed resource pack and poster will be sent to all successful recipients of the books, and will be freely accessible to download and print online for any other ELC professionals who wish to use them.
