Skylar and the K-Pop Headteacher

Like any sensible pre-teen, Skylar is ‘appropriately obsessed’ with K-Pop. Who cares about maths homework or helping out at home when AZ8, the best and cutest band in the world, has a brand new music video? Grown-ups just don’t understand, least of all the prim-and-proper headteacher, Ms. Callus. But during an argument with Ms Callus in the school corridor, there is a flash of green light, and when Skylar comes to, she feels strange and … old! She and Ms. Callus have swapped bodies, and they have to find a way to swap back before the AZ8 concert on Saturday!

Skylar and the K-Pop Headteacher is wonderfully kooky, funny, and original. Skylar and her bestie Dana navigate the difficulties of pre-teen life including empathy, activism, and finding yourself, with charming imperfection. How do you stay true to your friends and yourself at the same time? Can you learn to care about your sworn enemies? And when does ‘appropriate’ obsession become inappropriate? It’s not easy, but they do their very best and learn a lot along the way.

Full of humour and sincerity, this is a lovely book for any pre-teen feeling a bit lost or overwhelmed as they start secondary school. It deals with a difficult period of life – not quite a child, not quite a teenager – with sympathy and insight. The characters are rich, the plot is exciting, and the narrative will make even a non-fangirl grownup laugh out loud. It is silly, sparkly, sweet, and very, very special.
