Children’s Books Ireland is delighted to announce that we have been awarded €38,000 from the RTÉ Toy Show Appeal grants for 2024/25 by Community Foundation Ireland.

This grant will be used to fund our Every Child A Reader book-gifting programme in selected DEIS schools in Ireland, bringing books and the joy of reading to so many children. Our existing programme offers a wide range of resources for each school, including hundreds of new books for each school's library. With the extra support from this grant, we can enhance the programme further and give the gift of a book... to keep for every child in the chosen schools!

What is the Every Child A Reader programme?

Our Every Child A Reader programme draws on the organisation's vision, we want every child in schools to be reading more, enjoying reading more and reading more widely. We hope to enable positive, sustainable changes in these selected schools by providing brilliant books, engaging resources, and inspiring visits from Champions of Reading.

The aim of the programme is to make reading part of the fabric of school life, and to create buzz and excitement for the whole school community. We want every student to feel part of their library's success, teachers to feel supported in making use of the library, and families to be encouraged to bring the culture of reading into their homes.

Each participating school will receive:

  • A diverse library of excellent modern titles, covering all ages, interests, genres, forms and issues
  • Regular visits and workshops with an inspiring Champion of Reading (author/illustrator)
  • A specially designed resource pack including reading guides and lists to support use of the books in the classroom and at home
  • Display materials including posters, stickers, bunting and bookmarks!
  • A book to keep for every student in the school to encourage a love of reading beyond the classroom.

Elaina Ryan, CEO of Children’s Books Ireland, said:

'We are thrilled to receive such valuable support from the RTÉ Toy Show Appeal with Community Foundation Ireland to help us work towards our vision: every child a reader. Through the generosity shown by the Irish public to this heart-warming appeal, we can we can bring the life-changing benefits of reading for joy to children and young people all over Ireland. The gift of this award will help us to develop a culture of reading in school communities and beyond, making an impact that will last for a lifetime.’

How the RTÉ Toy Show Appeal supports our work

In 2021, Children’s Books Ireland launched our Every Child A Reader: Reading Communities project, which was funded by the RTÉ Toy Show Appeal in partnership with Community Foundation Ireland. After three wonderful years this came to an end in June 2024. You can learn all about the project and it's impact on each school involved below.
