Squid Squad 2: Shrimply the Best

Aoife Dooley’s latest graphic novel is another headfirst dive into bountiful colour and expressive, playful illustration. A marvellous follow-up to the first Squid Squad story, Nothing to Sea Here, readers rejoin Ollie and Zing and their underwater crew for more deep-sea adventures.

The artwork style is fun and accessible, maintaining a clear visual pattern that makes it easy for young readers to follow each page. Through her unique storytelling and instantly recognisable illustrations, Dooley firmly establishes herself as a standout contemporary Irish children’s author and illustrator.

This reviewer was particularly taken with Barney the sea anemone, whose sad eyes and gentle expressions are visceral enough to spark an emotional reaction for grown-ups too! Much like its predecessor, the novel is divided into four short adventures and interspersed with story activities that keep young readers engaged without overwhelming them. Shrimply the Best would make for an excellent bedtime read, equally enjoyable for parents and children alike, allowing for distinct voices for each character depicted.
