Family, and the different ways they show love, is at the heart of the story – from the special bond Kofi has with his dad, to the fiery support of his sister, and his overbearing yet well-meaning mum who just wants the best for her child. Kofi also meets some great characters as he navigates finding his place in a new school, from his supportive coach to an unexpected friendship that blossoms.
Eyeson deftly captures the voice of a boy navigating change, dealing with the sense of not belonging while also believing that his dreams may be achievable. This book explores many thought-provoking themes that create space for discussion, including class, racism, identity, parental expectations, bullying, and not giving up when things get tough. As the story unfolds, Kofi learns how to handle challenging situations and ultimately gains the courage to speak up for himself.
