The Pumpkin Seed
The Pumpkin Seed explores a sweet analogy between a newly blended family alongside the growth cycle of a pumpkin plant – a beautifully profound, yet simple concept.
Mum’s girlfriend is moving in, and we’re introduced to this huge life event by our main character. It’s a lot for her to get used to, yet through the comforting language and soft tactile nature of the illustrations, we move through the tale with ease. Told from a child’s perspective, we gain insight into the emotions and development of the story as well as the relationships within it.
With each page turn we experience the ups and downs alongside the family as the story never shies away from tough feelings. Whether it’s disgust at the new slimy compost bin, jealousy over cuddles or an outburst of rage, the adults accept and validate the emotions experienced in a gentle and safe way. Colourful illustrations with fun pattern and mark making, soften the blow of these big feelings for us readers, making them manageable. While the simple, yet expressive, posing and facial expressions are relatable and understandable, emphasising the mood our main character is feeling every step of the way.
The book is perfect for blended families or those in the midst of a transition. We learn that small things can often feel big and that sometimes, you just need to wait as a seed slowly transforms and grows into something beautiful.
