We Can Be Mermaids is the story of the very special bond between a Dad and his five-year-old daughter Silver. Dad would do anything for Silver, even facing his biggest fear and learning to swim.
This book is cleverly written from the perspective of a 5-year-old as it details Silver’s daily life and all the wonderful activities she and her Dad experience together. Silver dreams of being a mermaid; swimming is her biggest passion in life, and you can feel her confusion when she discovers her Dad can’t swim – a discovery that rocks her world!
The illustrations in this book are fabulous, you feel like you are in a magical world under the sea. They are particularly strong at capturing the feelings and emotions that the characters are experiencing. For example, the illustration when Silver is surprised by her Dad swimming, shows her whole body from her hair to her toes is smiling. Dad’s face mirrors hers, and the eye contact as he lifts her out of the water says more than any words could.
