Reading Together with Refugees reading guide
A refugee is an ordinary person whose life have been changed forever by circumstances outside of their control. Someone who has left their family and friends behind, searching for hope away from home. People who when given the opportunity, can thrive and contribute to their communities. Everyone benefits from compassion.
Children’s Books Ireland and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, have partnered with libraries and bookshops across the country to encourage young people to buy or borrow a book about refugees. Reading Together with Refugees is a specially curated recommended reading guide available along with a free downloadable poster.
Reading allows us to dive into different worlds, learn about new perspectives and show compassion for others. Building empathy and understanding towards refugees, migrants and asylum seekers is more important than ever and so we encourage support in sharing these titles and the message of this guide.
This is a curated list of titles our expert reviewers recommend under the assigned theme. It is by no means an exhaustive list and we have tried, where possible, to include a spread across age ranges and genres under the theme. Any titles by an Irish author, illustrator, publisher or in the Irish language will be denoted with a shamrock.
Children’s Books Ireland in partnership with the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, produced this resource. We also wish to acknowledge the work of our Inis magazine and reading guide reviewers.
