Stories have the power to shape children’s lives.

A child discovering a book they love.

A reluctant reader growing in confidence.

A child experiencing disadvantage, owning books of their own for the first time.

A child finding escape and comfort in a book.

The stories we leave behind can be stories of change, opportunity, and hope for a child who needs it. By leaving a gift to Children’s Books Ireland in your Will, you can help transform a child’s life.

We believe that every child and young person deserves the opportunity to discover a lifelong love of reading, and all the opportunities that come with it.

After taking care of loved ones, a gift in your Will is a powerful way to ensure your values live on. Your kindness can help change the lives of future generations of children.

By choosing to remember Children’s Books Ireland, you leave behind more than a gift — you leave behind stories that will inspire children for years to come.

Why leave a gift to Children's Books Ireland?

Reading for joy is one of the single strongest indicators of a child’s future success and happiness. But not every child grows up surrounded by books.

Our latest research has uncovered that 50% of children on the island of Ireland own 15 books or less, 23% of children read for fun every day and too many children don’t own any books of their own at all. Our vision is ‘every child a reader’ and all our work centres on giving children an equitable chance to develop a love of reading, regardless of their background.

Children’s Books Ireland works to change that through:

  • book-gifting programmes that provide high quality, diverse books for children
  • school-based initiatives to nurture a reading culture that is joyful and exciting for every child, regardless of their circumstances
  • charity partnerships that reach children who are least likely to become readers
  • expert, independent guidance on reading for families, teachers and communities
  • support for artists who create the stories children fall in love with

In the last 5 years:

  • We gifted over 300,000 books to children and young people who really need them
  • We reached over half a million children and young people through our programmes
  • 91% of young people said that reading helps their wellbeing following our Everyone A Reader programme

A legacy gift will help ensure this work continues for future generations

The difference your legacy could make

Your gift could help:

  • put books into children’s hands
  • support schools to build cultures of reading for joy
  • help level the playing field for every child on the
  • ensure more children experience the joy of reading

Every legacy gift, no matter the size, helps shape the future for children across the island of Ireland.

After taking care of loved ones, any gift, large or small, can help future generations of children discover the power of reading. For example:

€1,000 could gift books to 100 children who are experiencing homelessness

€5,000 could gift 500 books to a school in an area of disadvantage

€5,000 could provide collections of diverse and inclusive books to five schools

€10,000 could deliver a reading programme to children in hospital settings, offering comfort and escapism

€25,000+ could help Children’s Books Ireland reach more children across Ireland through national programmes, book-gifting and reading initiatives that create lasting impact for future generations.

What types of gifts can you leave?

There are two ways to remember Children’s Books Ireland in your Will.

A share of your estate - A residuary gift after loved ones have been cared for.

A gift of money - A fixed amount left in your Will.

We always recommend speaking with your solicitor for advice.

"I absolutely encourage everyone who loves books to give to Children’s Books Ireland and be part of levelling things up. Giving to this cause is an act of complete self-interest because when children read, the world is a little bit better."

— Philip MacDermott, Children’s Books Ireland supporter and Founder of Poolbeg Press
