Children’s Books Ireland raises vital funds from our amazing community to continue our work to inspire a love of reading in children and young people because reading for joy changes children’s lives. Children who read for joy grow up healthier and happier, experience better mental health, empathy and self-esteem and have a greater opportunity to overcome socio-economic disadvantage.
We’ve put together some ideas for fundraising, all of them are based around sharing the joy of reading, so enlist the support of your family, friends or colleagues and see what you can achieve! We will provide you with our brilliant reading guides and bookmarks to incorporate Children’s Books Ireland into your chosen fundraising event.
Host one of your book club meetings in aid of Children’s Books Ireland. For this get together why not try selecting a children or young person’s book that you all loved and make that the book for discussion. See what new perspectives you can see when you read it as an adult. Ask everyone to make a donation to Children’s Books Ireland so they can pass on the joy of reading to young people.
A book swap is a great event to host in the workplace, and really easy to plan! Simply, ask your colleagues to bring in five previously read books to donate ahead of the event. They can even include a short review on a post it note. At the big book swap, all employees buy five ‘tickets’ for a set donation, and each ticket is then exchanged for a book.
This is a great event for people with towering TBR piles! Invite your friends to read as many books as they can within a set time. You can host it on social media and share your progress as you go. Commit to making a set donation for every book read and you can even add a leaderboard and prizes to include a competitive element.
For a fun literary-themed event, host a table quiz in a local venue and test participants knowledge of children’s authors and well-loved characters. All participants can donate to take part and all donations will help spread the love of reading to children and young people far and wide. Sound like fun? Organise a mass reading event where families and friends take their books out to read together! A great time to do this is during Ireland Reads. These events work really well for resident committees, schools and communities who want to come together to enjoy reading in a shared way.
Popular in bookshops and on BookTok, this is a well-loved idea when well executed! If you have some books in good condition, simply, wrap them in some paper and write a short description on the cover. From there, you can sell them for a small donation to Children’s Books Ireland. Everyone loves a new book and this adds an element of surprise and excitement to picking up a new-to-you title.
For dedicated readers our bookish challenges are fun, quirky ways to read more for fun whilst raising money for a great cause all at the same time.

- Have a DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) day
- Read the A–Z of children's books across the summer holidays
Simple invite your friend group, colleagues or fellow bookclubbers to make a donation, participate in a challenge, and share your progress with each other.
