Leabhar a bhronnadh

Tá sé d’aidhm ag Leabhair Pháistí Éireann bheith mar chrann taca do gach páiste i leith na leabhar, agus cabhrú leo grá don léitheoireacht a chothú beag beann ar a gcúinsí pearsanta. I láthair na huaire, áfach, is iomaí páiste nach bhfuil teacht acu ar leabhair sa bhaile, agus is iomaí scoil le leabhragán folamh, fud fad na tíre. Is féidir leatsa sonas na léitheoireachta a thabhairt do pháiste inniu ach €12 a bhronnadh le #GiftABook – cabhraigh linn an sonas sin a scaipeadh!

At Children’s Books Ireland, we want to ensure that every child has the chance to fall in love with reading and has a brilliant book to call their own. The act of reading a book can truly enrich our lives. But not every child can see themselves as a reader or has access to a book at home. You can help us to change this by giving the gift of a book!

Did you know?

More than 1 in 5 children under the age of 4 in Ireland are never read to.

Research shows that a lack of exposure to reading from even this young age can have significant impacts on children as they grow, learn, and develop. From improved mental health, increased empathy and of course, literacy and fluency, reading, especially for joy, is the single most important indicator of a child’s future success. Children who read grow up to be happier, healthier and have more opportunities than those who don’t.

Worryingly, since 2023, the number of books that children in Ireland own has dropped. In a world with ever-increasing costs and growing financial pressures, children’s books have become a luxury item for many families. But books are essential for every child.

How can I help?

With the support of our partners, we donate thousands of books to children in schools, direct provision centres, hospitals and homeless services across Ireland. By working to ensure that every child has a chance to develop a love of reading, we can improve the lives of children and young people all over the island of Ireland – and you can help us.

We want to get even more books into the hands of even more children. Can you donate €12 and gift a book to a child who needs it?

Help us to change children’s lives, one book at a time

By donating as little as €12 to our ‘Gift a Book’ appeal, you can help bring the life-changing benefits of reading and the joy of a new book to a child who needs it most. Through our annual appeal, we aim to bring the joy of reading to children and young people who really need it– to children accessing support services, in Direct Provision centres, in homelessness services and more.

We’re asking the public to donate as little as €12 to 'Gift a Book' to a child who needs it to help us change children's lives one book at a time.

It’s not just a book. It’s a constant companion, an escape in times of need, and a stepping stone to a life of opportunity.

‘As someone who grew up with only two books in the house, I know the value of what this appeal can do for children. Signing up to the local mobile library at 7 made such a difference to my life. I still remember the escapism and awe of reading my first proper book, 101 dalmatians. It was my own world, giving me some inner joy in a difficult house. Every child deserves to have access to books.’
