Ráiteas faoin nGaeilge/Irish Language Statement

Glacann Leabhair Pháistí Éireann leis an imní atá curtha in iúl faoin easpa teideal Gaeilge sa Bedtime Books Reading Guide a foilsíodh i mí Dheireadh Fómhair 2019, don ócáid liteartha bheo Storytime Express agus i playbook ImagineNation an tseachtain seo caite ina raibh gníomhaíocht amháin dhátheangach. Tacaíonn Leabhair Pháistí Éireann i gconaí le húdair, maisitheoirí agus foilsitheoirí leabhar agus le teaghlaigh agus an pobail a bhfuil an Ghaeilge mar theanga bheo agus oibre acu. Chun aghaidh a thabhairt ar na hábhair imní seo anois tá sé i gceist ag Leabhair Pháistí Éireann,  ábhar nua a chur ar fáil in ImagineNation: beidh dhá ghníomhaíocht nua ar fáil le híoslódáil, ceann as Gaeilge agus ceann dhátheangach ina mbeidh obair de chuid Patricia Forde, Steve Simpson, Sadhbh Devlin agus Paddy Donnelly. Chomh maith le sin, beidh muid ag déanamh athbhreithniú ar ár liostaí léitheoireachta chun tuilleadh ábhar as Gaeilge a chur isteach iontu, agus as seo amach tá sé i gceist againn go mbeidh leabhair i nGaeilge clúdaithe i gconaí i bhfoileacháin ar nós Bedtime Books Reading Guide.

Tá Leabhair Pháistí Éireann an-bhródúil as an obair atá déanta a thacaíonn leis an scríbhneoireacht i nGaeilge a chothú go dtí seo trí thionscnaimh éagsúla ar nós Recommended Reads/Rogha Leabhar, treoirleabhar léitheoireachta bliantúil, an iris Inis agus na KPMG Children’s Books Ireland Awards a dhéanann comóradh tríocha bliain an bhlian seo 2020, le trí leabhar i nGaeilge ar an ngearrliosta. Chomh maith leis sin beidh muid ag tabhairt cuireadh do na páirtí uilig páirt a ghlacadh in ocáid chomhairleach ar-líne faoin ár bpolasaí teanga ag tosú ar an 20ú Aibreán. Tá muid ag súil go leanfaidh ár gcairde agus ár gcomhghleacaíthe inár bpobal de dhíoltóirí leabhair, ealaíontóirí agus  foilsitheoirí atá ag obair trí Ghaeilge ag tabhairt tacaíochta dúinn, ionas go mbeidh muid in ann leabhair den scoth a chuir ar fáil don bpobal is leithne de pháistí agus daoine óga amach anseo.

Children’s Books Ireland notes that concerns have been recently expressed about the lack of Irish-language titles in the Bedtime Books Reading Guide published in October 2019 for the Storytime Express live literature event, and in last week’s ImagineNation playbook, which contained one bilingual activity. Children’s Books Ireland is and always has been fully committed to supporting authors, illustrators, publishers, families and communities whose living and working language is Irish. In order to address these concerns we will, with our partners, add new content to ImagineNation: two new activities will be available to download as Gaeilge featuring Patricia Forde, Steve Simpson, Sadhbh Devlin and Paddy Donnelly. We are also revising our themed reading lists to include more Irish language content. While unfortunately we are not in a position to revise the Bedtime Books Reading Guide, we are happy to ensure that books in Irish are always included in these types of publications in the future.

Children’s Books Ireland has always been and remains proud to support Irish language children’s literature through various projects, particularly through our annual reading guide, Recommended Reads; our magazine, Inis; and our KPMG Children’s Books Ireland Awards, which celebrate their 30th year in 2020 and this year contains three Irish books as part of the shortlist. We will also be inviting all stakeholders to participate in a pre-planned  online consultative survey on our Irish Language policy commencing the week of 20th April 2020. We trust that our friends and colleagues in the Irish language community of artists, booksellers and publishers, among others, will continue to engage with us so that we can work together to bring excellent books in Irish to the widest possible audience of children and young people.
