At the Day in the Life conference in January we at CBI tried something new, a New Writers panel. For Conceal and Reveal: Truth and Lies in Children’s Books, our annual conference coming up on September 12th and 13th, the panel is back, renamed New Voices, but with the same format. Authors and illustrators with new children’s books out recently or over the next few months are called up to the stage one-by-one and asked to read from their work for five minutes only. A buzzer will sound when the five minutes are up, so choosing an extract that represents your book at its best is the challenge! Confirmed for the New Voices panel so far are:
Nicola Colton – The illustrator, Doodle Doctor and active member of Illustrators Ireland has her first picturebook A Dublin Fairytale ‘a love letter to Dublin’ published by The O’Brien Press in October this year.
Kieran Fanning – The teacher from Meath has been a huge supporter of the CBI Book of the Year Awards Shadowing scheme so we are delighted to see his new children’s book The Black Lotus about a training school for ninjas being published by Chicken House Books later this month.
Tarsila Kruse – Another Illustrators Ireland member and CBI Doodle Doctor, Tarsila has illustrated Ná Gabh ar Scoil written by Máire Zepf to be published by Futa Fata next month. The book is about a young bear who is excited to start school but his Mommy just can’t let him go!
Geraldine Mills – Poet and short story writer Geraldine Mills has a novel for 10 to 12 years olds entitled Gold to be published by Little Island in July 2016.
Nigel Quinlan – Nigel’s debut, The Maloney’s Magical Weatherbox, a novel for 9 to 12 year olds was published by Orion Press in April this year. The novel concerns The Maloney family and their quest to ensure the seasons change every year.
