A statement from Children's Books Ireland

Children’s Books Ireland is firmly committed to diversity, inclusion and representation within our organisation as well as in our work with artists and audiences.

Our Pride Reading Guide, published in 2022 to replace our Rainbow Reads reading list, contains 100 LGBTQ+ inclusive titles for young readers aged 0–18. As with all of our resources, in compiling this list we strived to include books that were of excellent quality and that would positively represent every member of the LGBTQ+ community.

Children’s Books Ireland reviews hundreds of titles each year, together with our pool of expert reviewers and section editors. On receiving a recent complaint about This Book is Gay, our team undertook an in-depth review of this title, and sought the views of an external reader from an LGBTQ+ charity.

After careful consideration, we have decided to remove This Book is Gay from the Pride Reading Guide. The book was first published in 2014 and revised in 2020. Much of the book’s content remains valuable for LGBTQ+ teenagers, however some aspects do not reflect the more inclusive current language used by the LGBTQ+ community.

Although it was initially recommended for readers aged fifteen and older, we have found that the language and tone is better suited to older teenagers and young people outside of Children’s Books Ireland’s 0–18 age remit.

We will be reviewing the Pride Reading Guide ahead of Pride 2023 and will work to ensure that any non-fiction titles in particular are helpful to and suitable for their audience, and that they work to support LGBTQ+ young people by providing clear and accurate information in an age-appropriate way.
