As schools and families across Ireland mark World Book Day this week, we're working with An Post to make sure that thousands of children in hospital, Direct Provision centres and temporary accommodation can take part in the celebrations.

Together, we have delivered boxes of brand-new books to charities across the country, including Children’s Health Ireland, Saint Vincent de Paul and NOVAS, reaching 3,150 children supported by their services ahead of the big day.

BUMBLEance, providers of dedicated ambulance services for sick children, have also received a little library of new books to be enjoyed by their young passengers.

These books, created by Irish artists and selected for their warmth, excellence and joyful illustrations, will bring a smile to children who need it most this World Book Day.

'World Book Day is one of the few days in the year when reading moves from being a solitary activity to being the shared special pastime of a large and vibrant community of readers.

In partnership with An Post, we are delighted to extend the reach of that community, making sure that children experiencing difficult circumstances have a chance to get lost in a book. We hope that these brand new books by Irish authors and illustrators will spark a love of reading that lasts a lifetime.'

– Elaina Ryan, CEO of Children's Books Ireland

The books by Irish authors being donated to mark World Book Day are:

  • Fox and Son Tailers by Paddy Donnelly, published by The O’Brien Press
  • Milly McCarthy is a Complete Catastrophe written by Leona Forde and illustrated by Karen Harte, published by Gill
  • Rita agus an Ninja written by Máire Zepf and illustrated by Mr Ando, published by An tSnáthaid Mhór (Irish Language)
  • The Hug (Hedgehog and Friends) written by Eoin McLaughlin and illustrated by Polly Dunbar, published by Faber
