All Together Now
The Dick, Kerr girls are back and ready for another round! This time, we follow the life of Martha, younger sister to Hettie and Freddie. When Martha is invited to join the Dick, Kerr Ladies Football team for training, she can hardly believe her luck. But soon the pressure of living up to their expectations creeps up on her, and she questions herself and her abilities. The local boys are treating her differently, and life at home is becoming more complicated. Growing up is proving to be more difficult than she could have ever imagined.
The third instalment in the Dick, Kerr series, this is an historical retelling of the one of the earliest recorded women’s association football teams in Preston, England. Set in 1920, the narrative brings the reader into a world where the Great War has ended but the fight for equality for women has just begun. The dedication and passion displayed by the Dick, Kerr girls when faced with backlash from the Football Association is inspiring. The cover design gives the reader a sense of the time in which Martha exists, and effectively captures the heart of this story. The simple illustrations found throughout the novel allow the reader to feel as if they are part of the team, following along in Martha’s adventure.
A bittersweet coming-of-age novel, this story will encourage readers to follow their dreams, even if they work out in unexpected ways. This would be perfect for fans of Robin Stevens and Lesley Parr.
