Burning Crowns
Following twin queens Wren and Rose as they defend their kingdom from Oonagh, the twins’ evil undead ancestor. Burning Crowns is the final book of the Twin Crowns trilogy, but very much stands on its own as a fantasy novel with a large dollop of romance, well-developed characters and with the previous history of the story clearly explained for new readers.
The narrative of both sisters are nicely woven together, with each chapter of the book focusing on either Wren or Rose, the story is passed seamlessly from sister to sister. Each sister has their own challenges to face; Rose is attempting to gather support from other kingdoms while Wren struggles to destroy the curse she has awoken in a previous novel. As the story unfolds the tension really builds and the reader is drawn into the world of Eana and the threat that Oonagh poses to their kingdom. I found this book very hard to put down, especially towards the end.
The relationships between both queens and their respective love interests are a large part of the narrative, but they don’t overshadow the fact that this is first and foremost a fantasy novel. And this certainly isn’t a case of the queens being ‘rescued’ by the heroes. In fact as one queen puts it ‘Well, I’m afraid you’re too late. I’ve already rescued myself.’
