Dog Stayed

Mr Hindbottom cuts a sorry figure as he negotiates his grief over the death of his wife. While this is not mentioned specifically in the story, Margeaux Davis’s illustrations tell this part of Mr. Hindbottom’s story with great effect. The colour palette shifts beautifully as the story progresses. In his grief and loneliness, Mr. Hindbottom’s life is demonstrated by the use of greys  and muted colours. However, as he allows Dog into his life, the palette shifts to warmer greens, yellows and oranges. The palette reverts again to the cooler shades in Dog’s grief, only to become warm again as he, too, allows love and friendship back into his life. 

The individual scenes portrayed are filled with clues and details which will provide great talking points for adult reader and child listener. However, Forster alludes to Mr. Hindbottom’s eventual death merely by stating that ‘he was gone’ something that may be a bit ambiguous for a young child and provoke further questions – gone where?. Children are able to deal with reality and are better served by direct and unambiguous language, delivered sensitively. 

Nevertheless, this is a beautiful book by the Australian duo. Despite the obvious themes of death, sorrow and loss, this story is ultimately about love, hope and renewal of faith in life. A heart-warming story appealing to both adults and children.
