The Double Life of Ted Amos
Ted’s life takes an unexpected turn when his parents split up, leading him to explore a new life which isn’t always straight forward. Set mainly in Milton Keane’s, the novel plot focuses on the relationships between Ted’s parents, his friends and his own journey of self-discovery. It explores those difficult pre-teen years when trying to work out just who you are is a difficult and precarious journey.
The novel also sensitively explores diversity, sexuality, bullying, familial relationships and mental health in a way which can connect with a younger audience age appropriately. It is a realistic exploration of how as individuals we all have our troubles, inner conflicts and ability to mask the truth. In the end, the importance of being who you are is at the heart of Green’s message. Green manages to explore these themes in a truly hilarious and uplifting way. Be prepared for many laugh out loud moments as Ted makes awful decisions which are explored through the lens of humour and understanding.
This novel encourages and supports young people through their transformational journey into adolescence with a fantastic humour but ultimately with forgiveness and acceptance. A hilarious and highly enjoyable novel.
