Evie and Maryam's Family Tree

This moving story is set in London where we meet both Evie and Maryam. The girls attend the same school, but have never really been friends. That is, until they are grouped together for a school project on researching their family tree.

Here they realize by some coincidence, that their relatives were friends in India when they were young. In addition to this, the girls discover that they have a mysterious folder, which has been passed down through the generations called ‘Family Recipes’ written in a code they do not understand.  As they work together to decipher the code they uncover an incredible story from the past stretching back two generations which links them together. 

With a strong historical background, throughout the book, we get flashbacks from the girls’ relatives in India and gain a fascinating insight into Indian life from the 1920’s onwards. This book is an emotive and complex story as we follow Evie and Maryam on their journey. We see their friendship develop with some struggles along the way including elements of bullying within their school group. 

Easy to follow and interesting to read, this book explores family identity and how to find your way in the world. This is the story of prevailing friendships and the lasting effects they can have.
