The Fear

Kian loves to play football with his best mate Azeem. However, when the chance arises to join the local team with his buddy, Kian is very reluctant. What’s even stranger is that he’s the best footballer on the estate.

No one knows that Kian is filled with ‘the Fear’, after a terrible coach robbed him of his footballing  confidence. He wants to support Azeem, but can he face the pressure of being part of a team again. Can he overcome the Fear?

Barrington Stoke publish books adapted to different reading ages for reluctant readers and children with dyslexia. This is yet another successful, accessible book and is particularly suitable for those with a reading age of seven years. The chapters are short, and full of page turning moments. The text is easy to read, with lots of space and plenty of dialogue. Fun black and white illustrations complement the text, illustrating the footballing action and portraying Kian’s emotions as he struggles with his anxiety.

Sports fan will enjoy this book, but you don’t have to be interested in football to relate to this story of self-esteem and resilience. It shows how anyone can experience anxiety or pressure and highlights the importance of friendship and teamwork. An important message and an action-packed and engaging story.
