Find Peace in a Poem: Poetry About Mindfulness

This anthology contains poems by a diverse range of twenty contemporary poets including Mandy Coe, Elizabeth Acevedo and Northern Irish-Kashmiri poet, Nikita Gill. The introduction highlights the spell that poetry casts and throughout the collection, the poets prompt readers to slow down, doodle, write and become more aware of themselves and their surroundings.

Hopeful language is used throughout; Sue Hardy-Dawson suggests using the words ‘tall days’ and ‘small days’ instead of ‘good days’ and ‘bad days,’ while Georgia Heard describes how to take an ‘inner weather report’, acknowledging and accepting ‘stormy’ or ‘sunny’. Kit Wright reminds readers to cherish what is special about themselves and their lives, giving them the freedom to conjure up their very own magic box and Joseph Coelho writes about searching for silence only to discover it within himself.

Beautiful illustrations provided by Annalise Barber, Mariana Roldan, Masha Manapov and Nabila Adani create comforting, dreamy characters and spaces that will also help younger children’s comprehension of the poems. Children may find it soothing to trace the outline of the peaceful child on the tactile cover that, along with the endpapers, show the breadth and vibrancy of a blue sky high above the clouds, echoed in Naomi Shihab Nye’s poem ‘Over the Weather.’

It is a wonderful way to learn about the benefits of taking a poetic pause, this book would be an excellent addition to any home, library or school as a calming treat to encourage mindful moments.
