Eliza Geller is an 18-year-old who is sure of two things: her love for the fictional TV show Vampire Falls: and, that she has a nemesis in her former friend Charlie Chamberlain. Foes & Cons takes place over a convention weekend, where fans of Vampire Falls come together to celebrate and revel in their love of the show. This celebration becomes complicated for Eliza when she realizes that Charlie will also be present.
Eliza is a self-proclaimed nerd who has found a sense of confidence and community as a member of the Vampire Falls fandom. As a protagonist, Eliza is incredibly realistic as an 18-year-old who is learning about herself and the world, through the lens of friendship and fandom. At times you will find yourself wishing for Eliza to see things as they are and not as she perceives them, and at others, you will find yourself celebrating her growth. She is a complex character, confident in her decisions, regardless of the outcome and who she may hurt in the process. Over the course of the weekend, we see Eliza develop as a character, with growth that feels earned and realistic.
This novel is recommended to a more mature reader (there are some adult themes throughout), who either already enjoy or want to know more about the world of fandoms.
