Food for the Future: Sustainable Farms Around the World
A pretty, brightly coloured rhyming book that takes us to twelve sustainable farms around the world, including both modern and or indigenous. The rhyming text and beautifully detailed artwork are appealing to all ages, with a glossary for one word in the text for each farm shown and a pronunciation guide for any name that could be hard for an English speaker to say.
This is a book of two halves. The second section moves away from being a simple picturebook layout and goes into further detail on each farm asking bigger questions; where does it come from? How does it work? Why is it sustainable? Did you know? for each of the twelve farms. This is an effective device to clearly deliver information about each farm and sustainable farming in general. The layout is attractive, with the text presented on a block of colour and a detail of the original illustration beside it. There is also a map of the world showing where each farm is, with descriptions of what both sustainable farming and food justice are.
This book is a timely reminder that there are alternatives to large scale industrial agriculture and there are sustainable solutions to food and farming out there if we look for them. An inspiring book to be delivered into young hands, giving hope for the future, due to the two different sections of this book, it would be ideal for siblings, or for a younger child to grow into.
