Hat Tricks

A hat is presented and out of it comes an entire world. First arrives our magician, Hattie, in a smart yellow jacket and dickie-bow. Following on from Hattie is an assortment of animals and, eventually, their habitat.

Opening with the question ‘What is this?’, Hat Tricks invites dialogic reading and provokes prediction from the start – great early literacy practices. This question-and-answer, call-and-response pattern continues throughout. Language is clear and simple while evoking a great sense of play – children can join in the repeated refrain ‘Abracadabra, katakurico’ once they get their mouths around it!

Illustrations are distinctive, the colour palette is a careful balance of calm water-colour pastels with bold marker outlines and primary accents. Pages are uncluttered, with no unnecessary detail. There is great attention paid to facial expressions. Of particular note is a marvellously expressive octopus.

Great fun, and rich learning for the under 3s.
