A Million to One

A Million to One gives the reader a glimpse into a point in history that captures the excitement and glamour of the luxurious, unsinkable Titanic. Four young women are drawn together to carry off the biggest heist of their lives – stealing a rare jewel-encrusted poetry book that will travel to America on the Titanic. The charismatic thief Josefa crafts a plan for her skilled team: Hinnah, an acrobat and contortionist; Violet, a talented actress; and Emilie, an artist and newly skilled forger.

This novel is a page-turning thriller, which will appeal to fans of historical adventure stories, while simultaneously dealing with more serious issues. Jaigirdar’s novel explores themes of racism and class constraints for women and how their roles were defined by society. Her narrative is woven around the friendship of the four women and the love that grows between two of the characters, a love forbidden at the time.

Each chapter is narrated by one of the four women; in this way the author moves the plot along at a fast pace, the characters’ voices giving their unique perspectives on their journey. The breath-taking chase scenes involving the women mirror the frantic rush of the passengers trying to escape a sinking Titanic.

However, this novel is not just a story of four young women trying to survive the fate of a sinking ship. It’s also an exploration of the young women’s tenacity in striving for a life which they can live by their own rules.
