My Dinosaur Shoes
Getting new shoes is a challenging event for many children, and Roscoe does not want to replace his soft, comfy puppy shoes. Roscoe’s big sister Ivy shows him some new dinosaur shoes, and when he doesn’t want to try them, she leaves them where he can see them. In his own time, Roscoe decides to try the new dinosaur shoes, and finds that they are soft and comfy too!
This sweet and fun story is a great way to start conversations about change with children who find changes challenging. Ivy talks to Roscoe about his new shoes, she listens to him, and she gives him time to grow familiar with his dinosaur shoes, without pressure. This fantastic book both normalises taking change slowly and gives adults some great tactics to try with their own children too.
The illustrations are filled with personality, thoughtfulness, and a sense of fun. Throughout the illustrations we see Roscoe playing with fidget toys, wearing ear defenders, and using a communication board, normalising these everyday accommodations that many neurodiverse children use. The bond and acceptance between Roscoe and Ivy is clear, and this book beautifully captures their sweet sibling relationship.
