Professor Astro Cat’s Solar System

Professor Astro Cat is back for another exciting adventure. This time he is embarking on a tour of the solar system with his friends. The reader is invited too, and Professor Astro Cat speaks directly to the child in big speech bubbles. Through advice and encouragement offered along the way, the reader is easily engaged.

Professor Astro Cat journeys from the Sun to Neptune, and a double-page spread is given to each planet. Descriptions and explanations are clear and easy to understand. Difficult words are also included in a short glossary at the back. There are interesting facts for each planet and older readers are also likely to find out something they hadn’t known before. Did you know that Saturn could float on water?

Flying Eye Books are renowned for high production values and beautiful illustrations. This book is no exception, from the silver stars on the cover to how Ben Newman distinguishes the planets from each other. His designs are reminiscent of 1960s illustrations but with his own unique, modern touch. The boldness and vibrancy of the pictures will appeal to both younger and older readers.

Professor Astro Cat’s Solar System is a great introduction to the solar system but will leave children hungry for more. Due to the limited space in a picturebook, there aren’t as many facts as some children might want. It will likely encourage them to seek out more information about the planets elsewhere. However, they will find it difficult to find anything as educational that looks this good.
