Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr
This gorgeous book explains the Islamic celebration of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr and aims to give the reader a better understanding of a real cultural and religious celebration as the reader join a fictional girl called Raya and her family observing as they spend the month of Ramadan together.
Raya explains the reasons Muslims fast during Ramadan and also the rituals that surround the suhoor and iftar meals. She gives us a real sense of the importance of family and community during Ramadan, as well as the significance of doing good deeds, helping those in need and showing kindness. At the end of the book there are also fun facts about Islam and Muslims, the Lunar Calendar and craft and baking activities.
The illustrations are beautiful, using the same soft colour palette throughout the book to give a cohesive design. In every picture Raya is smiling and spending time with her family and you can really feel the joy and happiness leaping off the page. Readers will really get a sense of the value placed on spending time with family and showing charity and love to everyone through the pictures.
I read this book with my two children and they were fascinated to read about another culture and really enjoyed the activities and extra information at the end of the book. Non-Muslim parents will love teaching young children about other cultures, while Muslim families will delight in seeing their traditions and celebrations explained in a very child friendly way.
