Sherlock Bones and the Mystery of the Vanishing Magician

Honestly, if your name is Sherlock Bones, there’s really only one career path and fortunately, this particular Sherlock, with his trusty companion, Dr Jane Catson, are particularly dab hands at mystery solving!

This is the third book in this series and tackles the head-scratching mystery of  a missing priceless artwork, the Mona Lemur, and the disappearance of Otto, the magician himself. Sherlock and Jane are travelling around Europe on a fancy train, the Pawrient Express, when their fellow passenger, Otto the Magician, seems to vanish right before their eyes. The detective duo suspect foul play and in solving this mystery encounter all kinds of dodgy dealings, missing paintings, and a host of colourful animal characters that are  beautifully realised and that will make you think twice about what you know about Sloths!

The plot and storyline kick along at a cracking pace and the many twists and turns, as well as a very decent pun and joke ratio, keep readers on their toes. A major plus is that no prior knowledge of earlier books are necessary to fully enjoy what’s going on in this one. It IS  a ‘Puzzle Adventure’ and the puzzles and games liberally placed in each chapter are fun and just the right side of complicated for this age group. A minor quibble might be that there are a shade too many for those who prefer less interruption to the plot flow, but they are really fun to do and genuinely immersive.

In short, loved it!
