Shoot for the Stars: A Kickass Guide to Finding Confidence in Sport

In a world where sport books are typically written for boys, young girls finally get the perfect book for them in Shoot for the Stars.

Written by Paralympic gold-medallist Danielle Brown, this book goes from finding your sport to working on performance mindset, all while introducing the reader to loads of inspiring female athletes. The author’s guidance is built on her own experience, and she provides lots of interesting stories about her sporting journey, like times when nerves affected her performance and how she learned to overcome that.

Broken down into chapters focusing on aspects around building confidence – such as how to take on feedback or dealing with hormones and body image – and activities to build these skills, there are also a few sections that are fantastic for a quick reference. One chapter details all the incredible female athletes featured in the book. Another, which is especially fun, lists the many sports available to play, including ones you would expect like football, gymnastics and rugby, and loads others like rock climbing, disc golf and orienteering.

The illustrations from Perkin and De Ideas are vibrant, engaging and also wonderfully inclusive. They’re interspersed with photos of athletes, so readers will have real names and faces to connect with. I’m not sure I’ve encountered a book that shows so much disability inclusivity in sport before, and it’s brilliant to see!

Perfect for girls who are curious about sport, just starting out or already on their way to being future champions.
