Steve, Terror of the Seas
The cover illustrations and title of this attractive book will amuse children straight away. Steve, Terror of the Seas is obviously nothing of the sort, he is a cute, smiling fish, smaller than most of the creatures that swim around him.
Steve, who is in fact a pilot fish, swims around the ocean encountering many species of sea creatures on his way. All of the other fish seem to be afraid of him and move away quickly when he approaches even the fierce-looking ones. Humans too jump out of the water when they see Steve. So it seems Steve lives a solitary, lonely life, but this is not the case as we find out near the end of the story.
At the end of the book there are the true facts about pilot fish. This is a wonderful touch as young children often like to know if fictional stories are true ‘in real life’. Steve, Terror of the Seas is a lovely, simple story that will delight 2-6-year-olds. The book is beautifully illustrated throughout, it is entertaining and informative for little ones. There is huge scope for discussion around the pictures of life in the ocean. Young readers will love the idea of a small creature scaring all the bigger ones. A great book for adventurous kids!
