Tourmaline

The beautiful princess Tourmaline is imprisoned in a tall tower. With slight echoes of Rapunzel, this modern and inclusive fairytale introduces fear, caution and perseverance in the alleged brave knights who set out to rescue the princess. But only one is brave enough to weather all the obstacles. Nothing will stop him, or is it her?

This is a tale of diversity in the contemporary world, not only in the story, but in the art on every page. The colourful and modern art is balanced perfectly with the fun fairytale. From the beginning there is colour cleverly depicting each scene in the story. When we discover  that the brave knight Onyx is a woman, Ramos has cleverly placed a rainbow over the heads of the two women, highlighting acceptance and inclusiveness for today’s child. This book turns gender norms on its head, but also explores the power and the importance of meekness and endurance. The heroine shines in the end and the reader can’t help but smile.

A story inclusive of gender and sexual norms for today destined to win over children and to show the importance of diversity.
