Wren James and illustrator, Beth Fuller, have created a refreshingly new take on old myths. The story follows Dirk as he tries to settle back into ordinary university life after saving the world at just fourteen-years-old. Unfortunately for him, his old wartime enemy, Medusa, is now his roommate.
Beautifully illustrated with such heart and passion, the characters carry the weight that war and trauma can have on a young adult. The story encourages readers not to bury their grief, but to live with it and grow from the ashes left behind. The art style blends the everyday with the magical so fantastically and the use of social media, posters and playing cards to convey information to the viewer is a clever way avoid clunky exposition. James’ story of grief, trauma and friendship is something that will resonate with many readers.
Overall, this story is an enriching read for any young adult with a passion for myths with a slice-of-life twist. The Victors is a cosy, and in some ways emotional, read that I highly recommend both newcomers to the graphic novel medium and long-time fans alike.
