A Wexford Fairytale

Amy Devereux’s début picturebook, A Wexford Fairytale, is aptly named. Not only is it a beautifully illustrated fairytale with a touching message, but it is also a sincere tribute to the County of Wexford and those who call it home.

The story follows Bláthnaid, a young girl with a remarkable talent – she can always find the exact book a person needs. She puts this talent to good use by volunteering in her local library and her job is lovely and peaceful – until a monster visits! While everyone else panics, Bláthnaid realises that this monster might not actually be as scary as he seems. After taking the time to talk to him, she learns that he was cursed by a witch and joins him on an adventure to find the witch and lift her curse.

Their journey takes them all around Wexford – from the Opera House to the Heritage Park, Hook Lighthouse, and more. Each location is beautifully illustrated and would inspire any reader to embark on their own adventure around Wexford. The inclusion of local landmarks and heritage sites pays tribute to Devereux and O’Neill’s home County and all that it offers, while also reminding us that there is adventure to be found close to home if you just look around.

The beauty of this book lies not only in its illustrations, but also in its message. Bláthnaid’s story teaches us that there is often more to people than meets the eye and that sometimes taking the time to talk to someone without judgement can lead to new friendships and exciting adventures.
