Instead, the book opens up the rich history of magic. It is a truly wide-ranging exploration, with beliefs and magic systems from every continent discussed.
It also takes a deep view of magic, looking at its various manifestations in the world. We see how it has lived in myth and story, as well as its place in everyday life. We also see the nuances of how the lines between magic, religion, and science have blurred over the centuries. Puca doesn’t shy away from the darker side of the topic either, touching on the persecution that was faced by those accused of practising witchcraft, and how this was often powered by misogyny. Overall, though, the tone is bright and welcoming. A lot of this is due to Álvarez’s vibrant and busy illustrations. There is something for the eye to explore on every inch of the page. The pictures also help to bring to life the humans at the heart of this history.
Children fascinated by tales of magic will be thrilled with this trip through its true past. They will also have their critical thinking stretched in the process, as they are forced to consider why they believe the things they do, and what is at the root of these preconceptions. A great book to stimulate curious minds.
