This year’s CBI conference theme Better Together? Collaboration and Teamwork in Children’s Books looks at the pleasures and pains of working collaboratively. Sometimes viewed as a solitary pursuit, creating a book for publication is essentially a collaborative process. We have invited creative teams, a family and those who create in solitude to address the question, are we better working together?
This year we are delighted to be working with the Ottowa International Writers’ Festival in bringing some Canadian children’s books authors and illustrators to the conference. Last week we told you about Katherena Vermette, who is taking part in our ‘An Abundance of Katherines‘ panel. Another Canadian flavoured session sees the creative team behind Footpath Flowers (Sidewalk Flowers in Canada and USA), Jon Arno Lawson and Sydney Smith in conversation. Footpath Flowers is a beautiful wordless picturebook that has garner several accolades including the Governor General’s Literary Award for a Children’s Illustrated Book, the Canadian Library Association illustration award and a shortlisting for the Kate Greenaway medal.
We’re excited to hear about the collaborative creative process behind this beautiful titles as well as the joys and challenges of writing and illustrating a wordless picture book. Early Bird members only conference tickets at €100 are available at 01 8727475, with day and weekend tickets for members and non-members available here. In the meantime, enjoy the Pavement Flowers book trailer!
