Life: The First Four Billion Years

From the author of Can we Save the Tiger?, Exploring Space, and the Kate Greenaway award-winning adaptation of Gulliver’s Travels, this book tells the story of the universe: how it began, how the Milky Way was formed and how Earth and the other planets that make up our galaxy came into being.

The Child of Dreams

This beautifully produced picturebook is instantly attractive thanks to the high production values, design, and particularly the illustrations by Richard Jones. These are both painterly and graphic, with patches of colour layered one on another. To me, both images and use of colour are reminiscent of Brian Wildsmith’s wonderful picturebooks of the1960’s, yet remain bold and modern and fresh.

Drawn Across Borders: True Stories of Migration

Author-illustrator George Butler’s debut was formed from a series of interviews with migrants and refugees, detailing their experiences of migration. These personal accounts were shared with the author during a number of travels to areas with high levels of migration between 2011 and 2018. The people that he met did not have the option to remain at home safely for a variety of reasons, with migration becoming a means of survival for many. These accounts discuss the events leading up to departure, the struggles of the journey and what must be left behind in the process of finding a new home.

A World of Information

This is a miscellany of the very best kind. Readers will be hooked by facts as varied as differing kinds of knots, different kinds of print, the periodic table of the elements, neap and spring tides, the organs of the body and a whole host of other information. At no point does the trivia seem trivial, nor the information arbitrary.
