Once upon a time there was a very hungry lion and a collection of adorable little animals. The very hungry lion is all set to enjoy an exciting day with his little animal pals, but all of a sudden his friends start disappearing at an alarming rate! Is someone stealing the hungry lion’s friends, or is the culprit a little…closer to home?
A Hungry Lion is the first picturebook both written and illustrated by Lucy Ruth Cummins, previously best known as an art director and illustrator, and marks an auspicious entry to the genre. The tale begins with the titular hungry lion surrounded by the cutest assortment of tiny animals imaginable, all depicted beautifully in Cummins’s colour saturated illustrations. The reader is then lulled into thinking they know what will happen next until surprise after subversive surprise snaps them back with appreciation of the author’s wit and originality.
Reminiscent of the work of the great Jon Klassen, A Hungry Lion will delight any child (or adult) with a love of the macabre twist. There is not a wasted or superfluous word in the witty text and each character is illustrated to perfection with facial expression delightfully depicted throughout. A Hungry Lion will hopefully signal the start of a long and exciting picturebook career for the talented Lucy Ruth Cummins. I look forward to seeing what surprises she has in store for us in the future.
