Inspired by Faerie lore and Beauty and the Beast, A Court of Thorns and Roses marries magic, conspiracy and romance.
Stricken by a cruel winter, 19-year-old Feyre is hunting for her family when she slays a strange wolf in the woods. When a beast-like creature comes to claim retribution for its life, Feyre is dragged to a place both cursed and blessed with magic beyond her wildest imaginings. A prisoner in the Spring Court of Prythian, Feyre discovers that her captor is the High Lord Tamlin, a lethal faerie who once ruled her world. However, Tamlin’s tough façade gives way to an unexpected softness, and over time, Feyre’s feelings change from fear to love.
Meanwhile, political unrest threatens the stability of Tamlin's court, while whispers of a Fae invasion of Feyre's human lands grow stronger. When Tamlin is taken and enslaved to someone who seeks to destroy both the Fae courts and the human world, Feyre must complete a series of tasks to prove her love and win back the freedom of Tamlin and his people.
Maas is well-known for her Throne of Glass series, but in this novel, which skirts the line between Young Adult and New Adult, she has imagined an entirely new world, with complex and enigmatic characters who create a worthy foundation for what will surely be an exciting new series. Rich world-building, a plucky protagonist and a beautiful narrative combine to make A Court of Thorns and Roses a wonderful fairytale with definite crossover appeal.
