Fiona Waters (retold)
A fable is a short story with a moral, and what better fables are there than Aesop’s. Aesop’s Fables have been around in one form or another since 320BC, and loved by readers of all ages. Children, in particular, love them. It could be said that the fables are a guide to the wisdom of life, and the readers can and do learn great coping skills from the stories. At the end of the book there is an interesting short biography of Aesop.
In this collection, 60 of the most famous fables are retold by Fiona Waters, a famous children’s writer from Edinburgh.
The lay out of the book is very attractive. Each fable takes up a full A4 size page, and the moral of each story is printed in bold black type at the bottom of the page. The facing page has a full size illustration. The illustrations by Fulvio Testa, a distinguished Italian artist, are painted in pen and ink with water colour. The characters are so colourful they almost jump out of the pictures. This is a beautifully designed, appealing book to be enjoyed by non readers, as well as by those who can read. A gem in every child’s book collection, adults will also enjoy the book. It willmake a superior Christmas gift.
