Is it a bird?
Is it a plane?
No! It’s a book!
(You must need glasses)
That pretty much sets the tone for the third in a series of Create your own… books from the Judge Bros. and the results are ridiculously fun.
Doodletown needs a superhero and you need to draw them. It is a choose-your-own-adventure book where you must read, choose, draw, fold, twist, tear and more to complete the story. Yes, it does say tear. I needed to take a big breath before I did as instructed!
The writing and humour are spot on and the book is chock-full of jokes, both written and visual. The illustrations are simple black-and-white line drawings so you will not feel intimidated adding your own lines to interact with and further the story.
My one issue with the book comes from my own childhood frustrations and that is the paper quality. The paper used for the pages is pretty normal quality for a novel with printed type. However, it is terrible to use with coloured markers and inks, as it gets blotchy and leaks through to the next page. Colouring pencils also tend to rip the page as well if you go too heavy.
One thing, though. Look up ‘Quantum entanglement’ before you give this book to your favourite kid. Trust me. Ideal for 7-12 year olds.
