The Knights and Bikes series burst into life as a gaming experience inspired by cult classic movies like The Goonies, charting the adventures of new friends Nessa and Demelza as they explore the coasts of Penfurzy in a 1980s Britain that’s strange and familiar all at once. Together with their pet goose and the less than fresh head of a long-dead knight, the girls form the Penfurzy Rebel Bicycle Club, set to solve any mystery that crosses their path.
So the third instalment in the Knights and Bikes series kicks off with a new mystery for the Rebel Bicycle Club as Nessa, Demelza and Captain Honkers encounter a strange travelling funfair on Penfurzy island.
Fast-paced, and wonderfully funny, the story is perfectly complemented by Crowle and Newell’s inventive illustrations, paying wonderful imaginative homage to the series’ gaming origins. Gabrielle Kent’s assured narrative style is a joy as always and she brings her heroines to life with warmth, humour and genuine affection for her material. As usual, strong themes of friendship, teamwork and good mysterious fun create a fantastic treat for the reader! If you haven’t read the first two, this is your perfect excuse to catch up. 10-12
