The First Third Wish is a beautifully-produced book for young readers, which is part of Barrington Stoke’s Little Gems series. It keeps the dyslexic reader in mind as does the entire Little Gems series, and contains dyslexia-friendly features including the use of thick cream paper, which means words and illustrations do not show through the pages, and reduces confusion and visual stress. The font and spacing are also carefully designed to make everything as clear as possible for the reader. The care and attention that has gone into this book makes it a joy to read – regardless of age or ability.
The story follows the familiar fairytale quest structure, and involves the adventurous Dickon Barleycorn and the unhappy Princess Isabella, both looking for their happy-ever-afters, and Cobweb the fairy, whose first job isn't going to plan! Cobweb’s lost her first third wish and must get it back before it's too late! Ian Beck's illustrations are charming, and the inclusion of fun extras in the form of puzzles and star information on the inside book flaps is a lovely touch. I think all readers aged 8+ would enjoy this delightful fairytale adventure.
