The High Hills

This charming little book instantly took me back to my childhood; its creamy yellow pages, beautifully detailed illustrations and animal characters are reminiscent of times gone by, and conjured up memories of Beatrix Potter’s Mrs Tiggywinkle and Peter Rabbit, and Kenneth Graham’s Mole, Toad and Ratty.

In this story, the mice of Brambly Hedge are preparing for winter, storing their food and making warm blankets for the voles which live in the distant mountains. Wilfred joins Mr Apple on the journey to deliver the supplies, but a detour on the return journey soon has them lost in a thick fog. Enterprising Wilfred, however, has more packed in his backpack than just his lunch…

Younger readers will love having this book read to them; they will be enchanted by the simple adventures, the happy-ever-after, and the intricate illustrations. Parents, too, will be charmed by the nostalgia this story evokes.
