Votes for Women! is number 14 in the hugely popular Heroes In a Nutshell series from Poolbeg Press. Published to coincide with the 100-year anniversary of the granting of the parliamentary vote for women in Ireland, four of the women closely associated with the Irish Women’s Suffrage Movement are featured in short accessible biographies.
Caroline Busher does a fine job of condensing the key ideas and important events in the enfranchisement of women in the 19th & early 20th centuries, and handles the violence that some of the women were subjected to effectively and sensitively. Her young readers will find the lives of Anna Haslam, Hanna Sheehy Skeffington, Margaret Cousins and Cissie Cahalan to be both inspirational and shocking, and they are likely to come away with the sense that activism to achieve a vision of a socially just and equal world remains as important today as it was 100 years ago.
A very enjoyable and highly recommended read for all, teachers will find this book ideal for supporting thinking and questioning in the classroom and it will be a particularly welcome addition to school and classroom libraries.
