Channel 4 News ran a nice piece last night about YA book sales and reading trends. Research suggests that UK sales of YA fiction have doubled in the past 5 years, at a time where sales of printed books in general are on the decline. Channel 4 attribute this boom in sales to paranormal romance novels, kickstarted by Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight and kept going by the ‘new ‘ genre of dystopian thrillers.
What do you think? Do we really have Bella, Edward and Jacob to thank for getting teenagers reading? Or is the increase in sales simply due to publishers identifying a new market?
