Sharks! Sharks! Sharks!
There are a lot of books out there about sharks and other predators aimed at this age group, but this one is easily one of the most enjoyable to read, as well as one of the most beautifully produced.
Each opening deals with a different aspect of sharks’ lives including topics like baby sharks, nursery time, and even ‘Do sharks have friends?’ Or with different species, and physiological diversity – with some focus (of course!) on teeth and jaws, and a whole page focused on the Megalodon and other prehistoric sharks. There is amazing attention to detail on every page, starting with the vividly-coloured and original cover and gorgeous endpapers; a nice touch is the ISBN in the shape of a shark fin breaking the water.
Although the text is quite sparse, it has been extremely well thought out, with fascinating facts on every page, and the quality of the illustrations, vivid and detailed, but never gory, is outstanding. This means that not only can you read the book through in one sitting, (a bit long perhaps for a single read-aloud session but not undoable) but you can also choose particular openings and treat them as single chapters. As each opening has a different background colour, they are also easy to skip between and find again, particularly useful for the young reader who is still struggling with text but wants to return to a certain section.
